What does it cost to build a seawall?

When considering a dock project, google some version of the question:
“What does a seawall cost?”

The FAQs section on The City of Ft. Lauderdale’s website addresses the question as follows: “The City surveyed a number of seawall contractors
in May-June 2016. Seawall contractors quoted $650-$2,000 per linear foot, depending on the depth of the waterway and location of the seawall.
In addition, engineering and permitting services were quoted as $2,000- $5,000 per job…
cost will vary by the type and condition of the seawall in question.”

What is involved in the cost of a seawall?

There are many variables that go into estimating the cost of a seawall. For example:

Dimensions

Length and height of the wall are needed.

Materials
Due to DEP regulations and the volatility of the lumber market, lumber is no longer as cost effective as it once was. For just a few dollars more, you can get a vinyl wall that will have double the life span. We will put in Aluminum seawalls, which cost approximately the same as vinyl but have no warranty due to water conditions that can lead to corrosion.

Due to the rising cost of lumber and increased restrictions by DEP, vinyl is the most practical solution to build a sea wall and comes with the longest guarantee. Aluminum seawalls are available, but cost approximately the same as vinyl and have no warranty due to water conditions that can lead to corrosion.

Soil Conditions

Different soil densities either increase or decrease the ease of installation.

Obstacles

Underwater or underground obstacles (typically fallen trees).

Current Seawall

Current seawall material and condition.

Accessibility

Accessibility of the site for equipment and materials. (Barges will add 30%-40%).

Permits

Every project will need drawings that are sealed by an engineer. Permit costs can vary based on location, and may require more than one permit. Examples of permits you may need include: DEP, USACE, as well as local and county permits. Depending on your location, obtaining the necessary permits can take 1 week to 2 years or more. In Polk County, permits typically take around 30 days for issue.
